Chapter Thirteen
âAre you all right?â
Lorcan glanced at Eric and forced a smile onto his face. âYeah. Iâm fine.â
Eric frowned at Lorcan then turned his attention back to the road. âI thought weâd agreed on our two rules for relationships.â
Lorcan bit the inside of his cheek. Eric had a point, but the nerves swirling through his body felt so ridiculous he didnât want to share them. Maybe if he steered the conversation in a new directionâ¦
âSo, you like how your car is handling on its first drive outside the city?â
Eric made a disgusted sound before answering. âSheâs a pleasure to drive. Thank you for asking.â He slowed down at the toll booth and handed his money over to the lad behind the glass, facing Lorcan again as he pulled away. âNow that weâve got that out of the way, tell me whatâs wrong, please.â
Lorcan knew he should have known betterâEric could be like a dog with a bone when it came to getting his wayâand he sighed while he considered how to word his concerns. When his granny had first said she wanted to meet Eric, Lorcan had been delighted. Even when heâd called her back to set the date, heâd been over the moon at the thought that at least one member of his family was interested in knowing more about his life than just the bare facts. Now that they were on their way to take her out for dinner, thoughâ¦
âIâm not even sure,â Lorcan admitted while studiously staring at the passing countryside rather than Eric. âIâm nervous but I canât put my finger on the exact reason. I mean, it was my granâs idea to bring you to meet her. Itâs not as if Iâm forcing her into a potentially uncomfortable situation without her consent. Quite the opposite. But knowing that doesnât stop the nerves.â
Eric stayed silent for long enough to add to Lorcanâs worries and he studied his boyfriend. His gaze was fixed on the road and a slight frown had formed on his forehead.
Lorcan desperately wanted to find out what Eric was thinking but was reluctant to ask in case he wouldnât like what he heard. As he continued watching him, Ericâs brow smoothed again and he smiled.
âI keep on forgetting everything we do together is a first for you,â Eric said. âI know exactly what you mean. I remember the first time I brought a boyfriend home. I had no doubt he would be made welcome. I was certain my family would be their charming selves and I was a nervous wreck regardless.â
âYes,â Lorcan said, relieved that he wasnât as weird as heâd thought, âthatâs it exactly.â
Eric nodded. âYou realize it shouldnât matter and yet itâs important to you that sheâll like me, and I her.â
âYes, that!â
âIt never stops completely, I can tell you that much.â Eric glanced at Lorcan and winked. âIâm glad you didnât notice, but I really wanted my family to like you, too, when we went there to collect my stuff.â
Lorcan stiffened.
